Austin Restaurant Review: Part One
Mike and I are horrible when it comes to eating at home. We eat out probably 3-4 nights a week MINIMUM. This is partially due to the fact I only know how to cook a few things, and partially because groceries are so damn expensive (at Randall’s - the HEB near our house is GHETTO). So we have decided to try all of the local Austin restaurants to find our usual favorites. So far we have the following:
The Woodland - delicious food (especially the BLT and salads), but a little pricey, and hard to find parking on South Congress
Galaxy Cafe - sooo yummy, this has become our favorite so far - we’ve eaten there no less than 3 times in the last 2 weeks - and the best part is, it’s healthy!!!
Bill Miller BBQ - we just tried this tonight - pretty good BBQ (reminds me of Spring Creek BBQ in Dallas, except the peach cobbler was COLD and disgusting). Good french fries, pulled chicken, and rolls though! Plus, it’s super cheap, and they give you giant re-fillable soft drinks.
Brick Oven Restaurant - not bad for italian food, but not great either - I’m really picky when it comes to italian food… think we might have to try some other places to find our favorite.
East Side Cafe - we tried this with my friend Justin from law school who recommended it - and we’ve gotten several recommendations to go there from other people since - the food was delicious, but pretty pricey. Kind of far from where we live, but with the garden and chickens in the back area that you can walk through, it’s kind of a fun Austin staple to bring friends and family to when they come to visit.
Opal Divines -yummy food - I got a big burger that fell apart as I was eating it. Nice scenery, too. More of a bar than a restaurant though… probably a good place to hang out with friends after work and have a few drinks.
Highball - we went here with some friends - looks like such a fun place! They have dinner, dancing, old school bowling lanes, and skee ball! The food was just okay… and pretty pricey, but if you stay and play the games I’m sure it’s worth it!
J Blacks Feel Good Lounge - delicious pizza! Fun little bar that serves food, and you can sit outside on the patio (with dogs) and drink/eat. I felt a little out of place though being hugely pregnant in the midst of fun-loving single people :)
Zax Tavern - DELICIOUS food… great atmosphere. The only drawback was that our waitress totally sold me on the “thin mint girl scout cookie cheesecake” right before finding out that they were out of it - DAMN!!! She said they never know what cheesecake they will have that day, because the owner makes it at home. I want my damn thin mint cookie cheesecake!!!
Freddie’s Place - another FAVORITE. I had a delicious salad, and we sat outside on the patio. You can bring your dogs to the patio area, which is awesome, and they have live music on certain days/nights throughout the week. Fun place to go!
